Zach Hancock is First Driver of the Week

David Hicken and James Wofford have instituted a new program, Callahan Speedway’s Driver  of the Week (01/02/2010).  First to receive that accolade is Zach Hancock, 15, a sophomore at Jacksonville’s Desert Academy.

He’s been racing GoKarts for about six months and has placed no lower than 5th since that time.  He hopes to continue racing Karts until he’s about 19 and then graduate into Hobby Stock.

Zach likes to hunt with his father, John Hancock, and took a 7 point buck in 2009.  That’s his largest, so far.

See Callahan Speedway on the web or call (904) 507-1687 for more information.  They practice Thursday evenings at the Speedway which is located next to the Multi-Purpose Building and the Fairgrounds at the intersection of Musselwhite Road and US 1 just north of Callahan.

They race on Saturday.
Driver of the Week 01/17/2010

It was “a beautiful day in the neighborhood” Sunday as people lined up to get onto Callahan Speedway after GoKart racing had been canceled due to record low temperatures for more than a week and then rain canceled the normal race day,  Saturday.

As I drove up, I could see trucks dragging tires around the fifth of a mile Georgia clay oval track as
David Hicken and James Wofford , owners, got ready for a new day of racing.  No rain was in the forecast today, but there were a lot of clouds and we did get some sprinkles.

Kaitlyn Green is this week’s Driver of the Week for Callahan Speedway.   Thirteen years old, she’s been racing Go-Karts for about six months.  She’s in the eighth grade at Callahan Middle School (she started school at 5 years old).  Her parents are Troy and Christina Green.

She drives the two cars shown in the above picture on the right.   Kaitlyn asked me to include the following:

"Mr. Joey Miller, you are a wonderful help. Thanks for helping me and my daddy out with the Go-Karts. Without your help I wouldn't have  made it this far.

"Daddy and Momma, thank you for giving me the opportunity to race.  Thank you for your love and support thru it all.  I love you.

"Oh,  and I can't forget my uncle Donald.  Thanks for sharing your mad skills with me.  Thanks, Kaitlyn Green #22."

Her little sister Madison  doesn't race a Go-Kart yet, but does drive her little pink car all over the area.  She doesn't like to have her picture taken but I managed to get her when she wasn't looking.

Below right, some racers get ready to go on the track.

January 23d Callahan Speedway Driver of the Week

Jerry McLean is the newest Callahan Speedway Driver of the Week.  He’s been driving go-Karts since the speedway was being built.  David said that when they were setting up the track, Jerry kept showing up with a camera and they first thought he was some kind of inspector.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Jerry has worked for the City of Jacksonville for 15 years.  He is a supervisor with the Right of Way and Grounds Maintenance Division.  Jerry moved to Callahan in 2003.

Jerry served in the Army for four years from 1979 – 1983 and was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, and in Vincenza, Italy.  He reached E-5 or Sergeant.

(This is an online paper and one of my advantages as its editor is that if I make a stupid mistake, I can make an informed correction and no one need know of the initial error.

(I might take advantage of that at a later time, but not this one.    I apologize to Jerry and to the United States Army for moving Fort Bragg to Texas.  After doing the research I should have initially done -- I could have just asked Jerry -- I now have it in its proper location - North Carolina -- where it's been since 1919.)

Jerry’s been married to the former Edith Bullock for 22 years.  They have two children, 15 year old Shannon and 10 year old Evan.  Shannon is in the 9th grade at West Nassau High School and Evan goes to the Intermediate School.  Neither, at least at this time, is “into” Go-Karting.

Other winners may be found on Go-Karts 1 , 2, 4, 5, 6.
